That Time Our Plumber Tried To Upsell A Customer

At Avalon Rooter, we’re always happy to embrace the cast-offs of big companies. In most cases, they’re eager to turn a new leaf and set the bar high for the quality of their service. And they’re ready to say goodbye to the upselling tactics they were forced to employ at their previous jobs.

But, one time, we were truly surprised by the actions one of our new hires took. On his second day at work, he went on a call with a seasoned plumber. Everything seemed to be going well.

That is, until he decided to attempt to sell the customer a bunch of services they simply didn’t need. We were utterly blown away by his behavior.

Unfortunately, his negative behavior continued to escalate. Our customers always come first at Avalon, and having someone who blatantly disrespects our values and policies on our team would never be acceptable.

So, his brief career with us lasted a few short days.

The Plumber Who Cost Us $10,000

Having honesty and integrity means always doing the right thing, even when it’s uncomfortable or costly. And one new hire definitely put our values to the test.

Since we’re essentially a diamond in the rough of dodgy plumbing companies, we train our team in how we expect them to do things. We show them the ropes and ensure they’re ready to work independently before releasing them from their trainers.

We provide them with the support they need if they have questions or require additional training. So, when this particular new hire was ready to take care of our customers on his own, we were thrilled to let him do so.

What we didn’t know at the time was that he was using incorrect parts on various plumbing issues and hadn’t communicated to his supervisors that he was confused. When we discovered the problem, we provided more training.

The mistakes continued until he was given one final chance. And on that project, he caused a $10,000 error.

Unfortunately, we realized he was not going to achieve the level of craftsmanship we demand at Avalon, so we parted ways. And we paid out of our own pockets to fix the mistake.
